Touriga Franca
Touriga Franca or sometimes called Touriga Francesa is a floral and aromatic black grape variety used in Portugal. It has intense aromas of blackberries, blackcurrant, cherries and plums. This is enhanced with strong violet and rose flavours. Unlike most of the red grape varieties used in the production of Port Touriga Franca does not have high tannins or produce deeply coloured alcoholic wines. It is used in the blend for its aromatic profile.
Touriga Franca is a relatively easy grape to grow in the hot Douro conditions. It has strong wood and is one of the more drought resistant vines.
Outside of the Douro Valley plantings for Touriga Franca are increasing in Dão and is used to make excellent still red wine.
